1. Installatie

1.1 Installeren

Download het zip-bestand van Vossenpost en open het (dubbelklik): je krijgt Vossenpost.app.
Sleep Vossenpost.app naar de map Programma's (Applications).
Open Vossenpost vanuit Programma's of via Spotlight (⌘Spatie, typ “Vossenpost”).

Melding “Kan niet worden geopend” of “niet-geïdentificeerde ontwikkelaar”? Klik op OK en ga naar Systeeminstellingen → Privacy en beveiliging. Scrol naar beneden en klik bij Vossenpost op Open toch. Dit hoeft maar één keer.

Vossenpost werkt op macOS 14.6 (Sonoma) of nieuwer, op Apple silicon en Intel.

1.2 Het welkomstscherm

Kies je taal (Nederlands is voorgeselecteerd). De taal bepaalt ook de naam en het logo: Vossenpost met de zwarte postpet, of Foxifier met de Amerikaanse pet.
Sta meldingen toe en kies of Vossenpost bij het inloggen start (staat standaard aan).
Klik op Account toevoegen…: er opent een apart venster. Geef het account een naam (verplicht, bijvoorbeeld “Werk” of “Gmail”), kies een voorinstelling (Gmail, iCloud, KPN, Ziggo, Outlook, uijttewaal.info) of vul de server zelf in, en klik op Test verbinding. Met Opslaan en verder ga je terug naar het welkomstscherm, dat meteen doorgaat naar de laatste stap. Meer accounts? Kies Nog een account toevoegen….
Klaar: het vosje zit rechtsboven in je menubalk.

Met Terug (of ⌘←) of een klik op de bolletjes onderaan ga je terug naar een eerdere stap. Een account kun je ook overslaan met Later instellen.

Het welkomstscherm kun je later opnieuw openen via Instellingen → Over → Welkomstscherm opnieuw tonen.

1.3 Bijwerken en verwijderen

Nieuwe versies installeer je via Instellingen → Over → Zoek naar updates… (of automatisch, zie 3.12). Verwijderen: zie de veelgestelde vragen.

2. Problemen met mailaccounts oplossen

Werkt een account niet? Dan zie je een ⚠️ achter de naam in het paneel onder het vosje, met een uitleg in een licht kader. Loop dan dit hoofdstuk door. Bijna altijd gaat het om het wachtwoord of de server.

2.1 Eerst: Test verbinding

Open Instellingen → Accounts en kies het account.
Klik onderaan op Test verbinding.
Staat er ✅ Verbonden!, dan klopt alles. Anders staat er een foutmelding met uitleg (zie 2.6).

Wijzigingen worden meteen bewaard (je ziet rechtsboven kort ✓ Wijzigingen opgeslagen). Verander je de server, gebruikersnaam of het wachtwoord, dan controleert Vossenpost het account direct opnieuw.

Voorzichtig met voorinstellingen. Kies je bij een bestaand account een voorinstelling, dan verandert de server. Vossenpost vraagt eerst of je dat zeker weet. Werkt een account opeens niet meer, kijk dan of de Server nog klopt.

2.2 Gmail

Gmail accepteert je gewone Google-wachtwoord niet in mailprogramma's. Je hebt een app-wachtwoord nodig:

Ga naar myaccount.google.com → Beveiliging.
Zet Verificatie in twee stappen aan (zonder dat bestaan app-wachtwoorden niet).
Zoek bovenin naar App-wachtwoorden (of ga naar myaccount.google.com/apppasswords).
Geef het een naam, bijvoorbeeld Vossenpost, en klik op Maken.
Plak de 16 tekens in Vossenpost bij Wachtwoord (spaties maken niet uit). Inloggen met = Wachtwoord.

Zie je “Application-specific password required” of “Gmail accepteert je gewone wachtwoord niet”? Dan gebruik je nog je gewone wachtwoord: maak een app-wachtwoord aan zoals hierboven.

Aanmelden bij Google (zonder app-wachtwoord) zit in de app, maar werkt pas als deze versie een koppeling met Google heeft. Staat er “Inloggen met Google is nog niet ingesteld in deze versie”, gebruik dan het app-wachtwoord (knop Gebruik app-wachtwoord).

2.3 iCloud Mail

Ga naar account.apple.com → Inloggen en beveiliging → App-specifieke wachtwoorden.
Maak een wachtwoord aan en gebruik dat in Vossenpost.

2.4 Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, Microsoft 365

Microsoft staat inloggen met alleen een wachtwoord niet meer toe. Kies bij Inloggen met: Microsoft en klik op Aanmelden bij Microsoft…. Je logt dan in op de echte inlogpagina van Microsoft; Vossenpost krijgt nooit je wachtwoord, alleen een toegangssleutel die in de sleutelhanger van je Mac wordt bewaard.

Staat er “Inloggen met Microsoft is nog niet ingesteld in deze versie”? Dan heeft deze testversie de Microsoft-koppeling nog niet. Dat komt in een volgende versie.

2.5 KPN, Ziggo en een eigen domein

Vossenpost gebruikt altijd een versleutelde verbinding (IMAP over TLS, poort 993). Servers die alleen onversleuteld werken, worden niet ondersteund.

2.6 Foutmeldingen uitgelegd

Melding	Wat betekent het / wat doe je?
Gebruikersnaam of wachtwoord klopt niet	Controleer beide. Gebruik bij Gmail/iCloud een app-wachtwoord. Let op hoofdletters.
Gmail accepteert je gewone wachtwoord niet	Maak een app-wachtwoord aan (2.2).
Microsoft staat inloggen met een wachtwoord niet meer toe	Kies Inloggen met: Microsoft (2.4).
Google wil dat je eerst in de browser bevestigt dat jij het bent	Log in op mail.google.com, bevestig de melding en probeer opnieuw.
Geen wachtwoord ingesteld / Nog niet aangemeld	Vul het wachtwoord in, of klik op Aanmelden bij….
Time-out: de server reageert niet	Klopt de server? Werkt je internet? Probeer eventueel een ruimere time-out (Instellingen → Algemeen → Geavanceerd).
Netwerkfout / Geen internet	Geen verbinding. Vossenpost probeert het vanzelf opnieuw zodra je weer online bent.
Server staat inloggen zonder beveiliging niet toe	De server wil een andere inlogmethode. Neem contact op met je provider.
De server heeft de verbinding gesloten	Meestal tijdelijk. Klik op Nu controleren; blijft het, kijk dan of de server en poort kloppen.

Achter een foutmelding in het paneel staat tussen haakjes de server, bijvoorbeeld (imap.gmail.com). Zo zie je meteen bij welke server het misgaat.

2.7 Geen meldingen of geen geluid

Systeeminstellingen → Meldingen → Vossenpost: sta meldingen toe.
Staat er een Focus aan (Niet storen, Werk, Slapen) en is de plugin Focus volgen aan? Dan is het vosje bewust stil.
Stille uren (Instellingen → Algemeen): in die uren wordt niet automatisch gecontroleerd.
Het luidsprekertje onderin het paneel: doorgestreept = geluid uit.
Het klokje/pauze-knopje onderin het paneel: gepauzeerd = er wordt niet automatisch gecontroleerd.
Instellingen → Plugins: staan Meldingen en Keffende vos aan?

2.8 Debug-informatie sturen

Kom je er niet uit? Ga naar Instellingen → Algemeen → Geavanceerd → Stuur debug informatie naar ontwikkelaar. Er opent een mail aan de ontwikkelaar met een bestand erbij. Daarin staan je instellingen, servernamen, het logboek en eventuele crashrapporten — nooit wachtwoorden of gebruikersnamen. Je ziet de mail eerst zelf voordat je hem verstuurt.

Is Vossenpost onverwacht gestopt, dan vraagt de app bij de volgende start of je het crashrapport wilt mailen.

3. Alle functies

3.1 Het vosje in de menubalk

Klik op het vosje: het paneel met je ongelezen mail per account. Rechtsklik: Instellingen, tab Over.
Naast het vosje staat een envelopje dat zich met goud vult naarmate er meer ongelezen mail is (1 = een laagje, 10+ = vol). Rood randje = er zit belangrijke mail tussen. Je kunt ook kiezen voor een gewoon cijfer (Instellingen → Algemeen → Weergave).
Het vosje snuffelt tijdens het controleren en springt bij nieuwe mail. Bij belangrijke mail springt er ook een vosje over je scherm (instelbaar).
Knoppen onderin het paneel: mailvenster, nieuw bericht, geluid aan/uit, automatisch controleren aan/uit, instellingen en afsluiten (rood). Houd de muis op een knop voor uitleg.
In het paneel: dubbelklik opent een bericht in je mailprogramma, rechtsklik geeft alle acties. Verwijderde berichten waaien weg, gelezen berichten lichten goud op met een zegel (ook in het mailvenster). Beide effecten zet je los aan of uit via Instellingen → Algemeen → Weergave → Mail-effecten. Met Diverse animaties daaronder zet je ook de andere animaties uit (Postzak, sterretjes, opploppende vragen).
Meerdere berichten tegelijk: klik op een bericht om het te kiezen, ⇧-klik kiest alles tot en met dat bericht, ⌘-klik zet er één bij of haalt het eraf. Onder de lijst verschijnt een goud balkje met Gelezen en Verwijderen (⌫); esc of het kruisje maakt de keuze leeg. De knopjes en het rechtsklikmenu van een gekozen bericht gelden dan voor alle gekozen berichten.
Groter of kleiner maken: sleep aan het gouden greepje rechtsonder in het paneel. Vossenpost onthoudt het formaat; dubbelklik op het greepje zet het terug naar standaard.
Staat er een account uit, dan zie je bovenin het paneel (en in het mailvenster) een rode balk Account uitgeschakeld. Klik erop om het in Instellingen → Accounts weer aan te zetten. Daar zet de knop Themakleur de kleur van een account terug op die van het thema.

3.2 Het mailvenster

Het grote venster met links je accounts (en mappen), in het midden de lijst en onderaan het bericht zelf. Open het via het laatje-knopje in het paneel. De werkbalk heeft Controleren, Beantwoorden, Gelezen, Spam, Verplaatsen en Verwijderen (⌘⌫). Is er niets, dan wacht het vosje bij de brievenbus. Met de gouden sleepbalk tussen de lijst en het bericht maak je het leesdeel groter of kleiner; dubbelklik zet hem terug.

Zolang het mailvenster of Instellingen open staat, staat Vossenpost ook in het Dock en in ⌘Tab.

3.3 Mail lezen

Klik een bericht aan: het wordt helemaal opgehaald en netjes getoond. HTML-mail zoals bedoeld, platte tekst in de huisstijl (citaten met een gouden streep).
Het bericht blijft op de server ongelezen tot jij het als gelezen markeert.
Veilig: geen JavaScript, formulieren doen niets, links openen in je gewone browser.
Privacy: afbeeldingen van internet worden niet geladen, zodat afzenders niet kunnen zien dat je de mail opent. Klik op Afbeeldingen laden, of zet het altijd aan in Instellingen → Algemeen → Weergave.
Bijlagen staan in een balkje boven het bericht: klik om te openen, rechtsklik voor Bewaar als….
Dubbelklik opent het bericht in je mailprogramma. Staat Spark ingesteld, dan gaat het naar Apple Mail (Spark kan niet naar één bericht springen).

3.4 Mappen

Klik op het mapje naast een account om de mappen uit te klappen. Achter elke map staat het aantal berichten; een oranje bolletje = ongelezen.
Postvak IN, Verzonden en Prullenbak staan altijd bovenaan. Systeemmappen (Concepten, Archief, Agenda, …) worden verborgen; dat kun je uitzetten.
In een map zie je de nieuwste 150 berichten, gelezen en ongelezen. In Verzonden heet de eerste kolom Aan.
In de Prullenbak is verwijderen definitief (na bevestiging), en kun je met Prullenbak legen alles in één keer weggooien.
Mail verplaatsen: rechtsklik op een bericht → Verplaatsen naar. Bovenaan staan de mappen die je het laatst gebruikte, daaronder alle mappen. Veel mappen? Kies Zoek map… (of de knop Verplaatsen, ⇧⌘M) en typ een paar letters: de lijst springt meteen naar de juiste map. Met ↑↓ kies je, ↩ verplaatst. Verplaatsen kan binnen één account, ook meerdere berichten tegelijk.
Slepen: sleep een bericht (of je hele selectie) uit de lijst, of uit het menubalkpaneel, naar een map in de zijbalk. De map licht goud op; loslaten verplaatst. Slepen op de Prullenbak verwijdert het. Neerzetten kan alleen op een echte map, niet op de accountnaam.
Meerdere mappen bewaken: Instellingen → Accounts → Ook deze mappen bewaken. Nieuwe mail daarin wordt net zo gemeld, eventueel met een eigen geluid per map.

3.5 Zoeken op de server

Typ in het zoekveld van het mailvenster. Staat het er niet tussen, klik dan op Zoek op de server. Er wordt gezocht in afzender en onderwerp (en met ook in de tekst in het bericht zelf), in wat links geselecteerd is: een map, een account of alles. Met alle mappen zoek je in Postvak IN en al je eigen mappen (zonder systeemmappen zoals Verzonden, Prullenbak en Ongewenst). Maximaal 100 resultaten per map.

3.6 Later herinneren (snoozen)

Rechtsklik op een bericht → Later herinneren: over 15 minuten, 1 uur, 3 uur, vanavond 18:00 of morgenochtend 08:00. Het bericht verdwijnt tot dan en het vosje keft opnieuw. In het mailvenster staat links Later herinneren met alle gesnoozede berichten; Nu weer tonen haalt er een terug.

3.7 Meldingen en dagelijks overzicht

Per nieuw bericht een melding (bij veel tegelijk één samenvatting), eventueel met een stukje tekst.
Klik op het pijltje naast een melding voor: Markeer als gelezen, Beantwoorden, Over 1 uur herinneren, Verwijderen.
Dagelijks overzicht (Instellingen → Algemeen → Meldingen): elke dag op een vast tijdstip één melding met het aantal ongelezen berichten, wat belangrijk is en van wie de meeste mail komt. Stond je Mac op dat tijdstip uit of dicht, dan komt het overzicht alsnog zodra Vossenpost later die dag draait (na de eerste controle). Met Nu proberen zie je hem meteen.

3.8 Regels en wit/zwart

Net als in PopTray: regels op afzender, onderwerp, tekst, grootte enz. (met jokertekens of reguliere expressies). Acties: belangrijk of spam markeren, eigen geluid, beschermen, negeren, als gelezen markeren, verwijderen, kleur, een opdracht uitvoeren (met macro's als %FROM% en %SUBJECT%) of loggen. Afzenders op de witte lijst zijn altijd vertrouwd, op de zwarte lijst spam.

Let op: de witte en zwarte lijst werken alleen in Vossenpost. Ze staan los van het spamfilter op je mailserver, dat vaak door je provider wordt beheerd (bijvoorbeeld Microsoft, Google, KPN of Ziggo). Mail die de server al als spam heeft weggezet, ziet Vossenpost niet, en een afzender op je zwarte lijst wordt door je provider niet geblokkeerd. Klik in Instellingen → Wit/zwart op het gouden uitroepteken voor deze uitleg.

3.9 Plugins

Plugin	Wat doet het
Meldingen	macOS-meldingen bij nieuwe mail.
Keffende vos	Het vossengeluid (of een eigen geluid) bij nieuwe mail.
Direct melden (IMAP IDLE)	De server seint de app zelf bij nieuwe mail, meestal binnen seconden.
Focus volgen	Stil tijdens een Focus. Het betrouwbaarst met twee Opdrachten-automatiseringen die `foxifier://focus/aan` en `foxifier://focus/uit` openen.
Voorlezen	Leest nieuwe mail hardop voor. Nederlands: Xander (nl-NL) of Ellen (nl-BE); Engels: Daniel (en-GB). Stemmen installeer je via Systeeminstellingen → Toegankelijkheid → Gesproken materiaal.
Lerend spamfilter	Leert van wat jij als spam of geen spam markeert.
Bureaublad-widget	Je ongelezen mail op het bureaublad (klein, middel, groot).
Opdrachten	Start een opdracht uit de Opdrachten-app met de nieuwe mail als invoer.
Webhook	Stuurt nieuwe mail naar een adres, bijv. ntfy.sh of Home Assistant.

3.10 Uiterlijk

Thema's: Klassiek goud (volgt licht/donker), Avond (donkerbruin met goud), Retro terminal (groen op zwart).
Sfeerachtergrond met het vosje achter de computer, gekleurd of zwart-wit vosje in de menubalk, logo's van afzenders (optioneel).
De vensterknopjes linksboven blijven altijd in kleur.

3.11 Instellingen

Algemeen: opstarten, uiterlijk, taal, mailprogramma, weergave, meldingen, stille uren en geavanceerd (time-out, bevestiging bij afsluiten, updates, logboek, debug-informatie).
Accounts: server, inloggen, controle-interval, geluid, mailprogramma en extra mappen per account.
Regels, Wit/zwart, Plugins, Over (met de link om te doneren als je Vossenpost waardeert 🙌).
Afsluiten vraagt om bevestiging (uit te zetten met Niet meer vragen of in Geavanceerd).
Het gouden vraagteken rechtsboven in elk scherm opent deze handleiding bij het juiste hoofdstuk.

3.12 Updates

Instellingen → Over → Zoek naar updates…. Automatisch controleren zet je aan of uit in Instellingen → Algemeen → Geavanceerd. Updates zijn digitaal ondertekend; alleen echte Vossenpost-updates worden geïnstalleerd. Tijdens het zoeken zie je een animatie: standaard een gouden radar. Je kiest een andere (vosje met verrekijker, snuffelspoor of het vosje dat naar de brievenbus rent) in Instellingen → Algemeen → Weergave → Zoeken naar updates; met Bekijk zie je hem meteen. Is er niets nieuws, dan meldt het vosje dat je helemaal bij bent; alleen bij een nieuwe versie verschijnt het updatevenster.

Bij de eerste start na een update laat het vosje in een kaartje zien wat er nieuw is. Later terugkijken kan via Instellingen → Over → ✦ Nieuw, naast het versienummer.

Vindt Vossenpost op de achtergrond een nieuwe versie, dan krijg je een melding en verschijnt er een gouden balkje bovenin het paneel (“Versie … staat klaar”). Klik op een van beide om de nieuwe versie te bekijken en te installeren. Ben je op dat moment met Vossenpost bezig, dan verschijnt het updatevenster meteen.

3.13 📬 Postzak

Een knipoog voor de nieuwsgierigen: het vosje houdt bij wat er allemaal langskomt. Klik in Instellingen → Over op 📬 Postzak, naast het versienummer. Je ziet:

Ontvangen: vandaag, de afgelopen 7 en 30 dagen, het totaal en het gemiddelde per dag.
Pieken: de drukste dag ooit, de drukste dag van de week en het drukste uur.
Top 5 afzenders: wie je het vaakst mailt.
Wat jij deed: gelezen, verwijderd, verplaatst, gesnoozed en je snelste reactie.
Het vosje: hoe vaak het keft en springt, hoeveel spam het wegving en de langste stilte.

Bij elk blok hoort een (steeds wisselend) grapje van het vosje. Bovenaan staat sinds wanneer er geteld wordt: de installatiedatum of de laatste reset. Met Cijfers resetten zet je alles op nul, na een bevestiging. De cijfers blijven op je Mac en worden nergens naartoe gestuurd.

4. Tips

⌘R in het paneel: nu controleren. ⌘⌫ in het mailvenster: verwijderen.
Rechtsklik op het vosje in de menubalk opent direct Over.
Benieuwd wie je het vaakst mailt? Kijk eens in de 📬 Postzak (Instellingen → Over).
Slepen en neerzetten (mailvenster):
- mail naar een map slepen = verplaatsen;
- naar de Prullenbak = verwijderen (met bevestiging);
- een selectie van meerdere mails gaat in één keer mee;
- ook vanuit het menubalkpaneel naar een map in het mailvenster;
- alleen op een echte map (niet op de accountnaam), binnen hetzelfde account.
Laat de server je mail in mappen sorteren (bijv. nieuwsbrieven) en bewaak alleen de mappen die je belangrijk vindt, elk met een eigen geluid.
Gebruik een regel Afzender past op *@jouwwerk.nl → Markeer als belangrijk: dan springt het vosje over je scherm.
Pushbericht op je iPhone: plugin Webhook met https://ntfy.sh/een-geheim-onderwerp en de ntfy-app.
Handige links voor Opdrachten of je browser: foxifier://mailbox, foxifier://check, foxifier://settings.

5. Veelgestelde vragen

Markeert Vossenpost mijn mail als gelezen?

Nee. Controleren en lezen gebeurt zonder iets te veranderen. Alleen als jij kiest voor Markeer als gelezen (of een regel dat doet) verandert er iets op de server.

Waar staan mijn wachtwoorden?

In de sleutelhanger van macOS. Instellingen staan in ~/Library/Application Support/Foxifier, zonder wachtwoorden.

Bewaart Vossenpost mijn mail?

Nee, je mail blijft op de server. Vossenpost houdt alleen tijdelijk de kopregels en een stukje tekst bij om je te kunnen waarschuwen.

Werkt POP3?

Nee, alleen IMAP (over TLS). Vrijwel alle aanbieders ondersteunen IMAP.

Stuurt Vossenpost gegevens ergens heen?

Alleen naar je eigen mailserver. Daarnaast, alleen als je het aanzet: logo's van afzenders (rechtstreeks van hun website), je webhook, en de controle op updates. Debug-informatie gaat alleen mee als jij de mail verstuurt.

Welke macOS-versie heb ik nodig?

macOS 14.6 (Sonoma) of nieuwer.

Is Vossenpost gratis?

Ja: vrije software onder de GNU GPL (versie 2 of later), net als PopTray waar het op geïnspireerd is. Waardeer je het, dan kun je via Instellingen → Over een bijdrage doen.

Hoe verwijder ik Vossenpost helemaal?

Sluit de app af, gooi hem in de prullenmand en verwijder eventueel de map ~/Library/Application Support/Foxifier. De wachtwoorden haal je weg in Sleutelhangertoegang (zoek op “foxifier”).

Waarom heet de app in het Engels Foxifier?

De Nederlandse versie heet Vossenpost (met de zwarte postpet), de Engelse Foxifier (met de Amerikaanse mail-pet). Je kiest dit met de taal.

6. Wijzigingen

Deze handleiding groeit mee met de app.

1.0 — september 2026: eerste officiële versie. Eerste versie van de handleiding (installatie, problemen oplossen, functies, tips, FAQ). Mappen, zoeken op de server, later herinneren, acties in meldingen, dagelijks overzicht, meerdere mappen bewaken, leesweergave, envelopje in de menubalk, inloggen met Microsoft/Google (voorbereid), automatische updates, crashrapporten, gouden vraagteken-knop naar deze handleiding. Paneel standaard groter en zelf te vergroten met het greepje rechtsonder. Mail verplaatsen naar een andere map (met zoeken op een paar letters). Vragen zoals Prullenbak legen en Verwijderen in de stijl van de app. Melding en gouden balkje als er een update klaarstaat. Welkomstscherm: account toevoegen in een eigen venster met Opslaan en verder; accountnaam verplicht (rood als hij ontbreekt); terug naar elke eerdere stap. Rode balk bij uitgeschakelde accounts; knop Themakleur. Opvallendere effecten bij gelezen/verwijderen, los aan en uit te zetten; een geopende map wordt bijgewerkt bij nieuwe mail. Zoeken in alle mappen; gouden sleepbalk voor het leesdeel. Mail slepen naar een map. Dagelijks overzicht komt alsnog als de Mac op het tijdstip uit stond. Uitleg bij wit/zwart over het spamfilter van je provider. Nieuw: 📬 Postzak met onzinnige statistieken. Paneel toont ook gelezen mail als die niet verborgen is; vragen vanuit het paneel laten het paneel open; meerdere berichten kiezen met ⇧/⌘-klik. Animatie tijdens het zoeken naar updates (gouden radar of drie andere), met eigen melding als je bij bent; kaartje "Wat is er nieuw" na een update; het vosje in de menubalk springt langer.

1. Installation

1.1 Installing

Download the Foxifier zip file and open it (double-click): you get the app.
Drag the app to your Applications folder.
Open it from Applications or via Spotlight (⌘Space, type “Foxifier” or “Vossenpost”).

“Cannot be opened” or “unidentified developer”? Click OK and go to System Settings → Privacy & Security. Scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the app. You only need to do this once.

Foxifier runs on macOS 14.6 (Sonoma) or later, on Apple silicon and Intel.

1.2 The welcome screen

Choose your language. It also sets the name and logo: Foxifier with the US mail cap, or Vossenpost with the black Dutch postal cap.
Allow notifications and choose whether Foxifier opens at login (on by default).
Click Add account…: a separate window opens. Give the account a name (required, e.g. “Work” or “Gmail”), pick a preset (Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, …) or enter the server yourself, and click Test connection. Save and continue takes you back to the welcome screen, which moves straight on to the last step. More accounts? Choose Add another account….
Done: the fox sits at the top right of your menu bar.

Use Back (or ⌘←) or click the dots at the bottom to return to an earlier step. You can also skip the account with Set up later.

You can reopen the welcome screen via Settings → About → Show welcome screen again.

1.3 Updating and removing

Install new versions via Settings → About → Check for updates… (or automatically, see 3.12). Removing: see the FAQ.

2. Troubleshooting mail accounts

If an account doesn't work, you'll see a ⚠️ after its name in the panel under the fox, with an explanation in a light box. Work through this chapter — it's almost always the password or the server.

2.1 First: Test connection

Open Settings → Accounts and select the account.
Click Test connection at the bottom.
✅ Connected! means everything is fine. Otherwise you'll see an error with an explanation (see 2.6).

Changes are saved immediately (you'll briefly see ✓ Changes saved at the top right). When you change the server, username or password, Foxifier checks the account again right away.

Careful with presets. Choosing a preset for an existing account changes its server; Foxifier asks you to confirm first. If an account suddenly stops working, check that the Server is still right.

2.2 Gmail

Gmail doesn't accept your regular Google password in mail apps. You need an app password:

Go to myaccount.google.com → Security.
Turn on 2-Step Verification (app passwords don't exist without it).
Search for App passwords at the top (or go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords).
Name it, e.g. Foxifier, and click Create.
Paste the 16 characters into Foxifier as the Password (spaces don't matter). Sign in with = Password.

Seeing “Application-specific password required” or “Gmail doesn't accept your regular password”? You're still using your regular password — create an app password as above.

Sign in with Google (without an app password) is built in, but only works once this version has a Google connection. If it says “Signing in with Google is not set up in this version yet”, use an app password (button Use app password).

2.3 iCloud Mail

Go to account.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → App-Specific Passwords.
Create a password and use it in Foxifier.

2.4 Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, Microsoft 365

Microsoft no longer allows signing in with just a password. Choose Sign in with: Microsoft and click Sign in to Microsoft…. You sign in on Microsoft's own page; Foxifier never gets your password, only an access token that's stored in your Mac's keychain.

If it says “Signing in with Microsoft is not set up in this version yet”, this test version doesn't have the Microsoft connection yet. It's coming in a future version.

2.5 Other providers and your own domain

Foxifier always uses an encrypted connection (IMAP over TLS, port 993). Servers that only work unencrypted are not supported.

2.6 Error messages explained

Message	What it means / what to do
Username or password is incorrect	Check both. Use an app password for Gmail/iCloud. Mind upper/lower case.
Gmail doesn't accept your regular password	Create an app password (2.2).
Microsoft no longer allows signing in with a password	Choose Sign in with: Microsoft (2.4).
Google wants you to confirm it's you in the browser first	Sign in at mail.google.com, confirm, and try again.
No password set / Not signed in yet	Enter the password, or click Sign in to….
Time-out: the server does not respond	Is the server right? Is your internet working? Try a longer time-out (Settings → General → Advanced).
Network error / No internet	No connection. Foxifier tries again automatically once you're back online.
Server does not allow login without security	The server wants a different sign-in method. Contact your provider.
The server closed the connection	Usually temporary. Click Check now; if it persists, check server and port.

An error in the panel shows the server in brackets, e.g. (imap.gmail.com), so you can see at once which server is failing.

2.7 No notifications or no sound

System Settings → Notifications → Foxifier: allow notifications.
Is a Focus on (Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep) with the Follow Focus plugin enabled? Then the fox is quiet on purpose.
Quiet hours (Settings → General): no automatic checks during those hours.
The speaker at the bottom of the panel: crossed out = sound off.
The timer/pause button at the bottom of the panel: paused = no automatic checks.
Settings → Plugins: are Notifications and Barking fox enabled?

2.8 Sending debug information

Still stuck? Go to Settings → General → Advanced → Send debug information to the developer. An email to the developer opens with a file attached containing your settings, server names, the log and any crash reports — never passwords or usernames. You see the email yourself before sending it.

If Foxifier quit unexpectedly, it asks at the next start whether you'd like to email the crash report.

3. All features

3.1 The fox in the menu bar

Click the fox: the panel with your unread mail per account. Right-click: Settings, About tab.
Next to the fox is an envelope that fills with gold as more unread mail arrives (1 = a thin layer, 10+ = full). A red edge means there's important mail. You can also choose a plain number (Settings → General → Display).
The fox sniffs while checking and jumps when new mail arrives. For important mail a fox also jumps across your screen (adjustable).
Buttons at the bottom of the panel: mail window, new message, sound on/off, automatic checking on/off, settings and quit (red). Hover over a button for an explanation.
In the panel: double-click opens a message in your mail app, right-click shows all actions. Deleted messages blow away, read messages light up in gold with a seal (also in the mail window). Turn each effect on or off in Settings → General → Display → Mail effects. Other animations below it switches off the remaining animations too (Mailbag, sparkles, popping questions).
Several messages at once: click a message to select it, ⇧-click selects everything up to that message, ⌘-click adds or removes one. A gold bar appears below the list with Read and Delete (⌫); esc or the cross clears the selection. The buttons and right-click menu of a selected message then apply to all selected messages.
Resize: drag the small gold grip in the bottom-right corner of the panel. Foxifier remembers the size; double-click the grip to go back to the default.
If an account is disabled, a red Account disabled bar appears at the top of the panel (and in the mail window). Click it to switch the account back on in Settings → Accounts. There, the Theme color button resets an account's color to the theme's.

3.2 The mail window

The large window with your accounts (and folders) on the left, the list in the middle and the message at the bottom. Open it with the tray button in the panel. The toolbar has Check, Reply, Read, Spam, Move and Delete (⌘⌫). When there's nothing, the fox waits at the mailbox. Drag the gold bar between the list and the message to make the reading pane bigger or smaller; double-click resets it.

While the mail window or Settings is open, Foxifier also appears in the Dock and in ⌘Tab.

3.3 Reading mail

Select a message: it is loaded in full and shown nicely — HTML mail as intended, plain text in the house style (quotes with a gold bar).
The message stays unread on the server until you mark it as read.
Safe: no JavaScript, forms do nothing, links open in your regular browser.
Privacy: images from the internet aren't loaded, so senders can't see that you opened the mail. Click Load images, or turn it on permanently in Settings → General → Display.
Attachments are shown in a bar above the message: click to open, right-click for Save as….
Double-click opens the message in your mail app. If Spark is set, it opens in Apple Mail instead (Spark can't jump to a single message).

3.4 Folders

Click the folder icon next to an account to show its folders. Each folder shows its number of messages; an orange badge = unread.
Inbox, Sent and Trash are always at the top. System folders (Drafts, Archive, Calendar, …) are hidden; you can turn that off.
A folder shows its newest 150 messages, read and unread. In Sent, the first column is To.
In the Trash, deleting is permanent (after confirmation), and Empty Trash removes everything at once.
Moving mail: right-click a message → Move to. Your recently used folders are at the top, all folders below. Lots of folders? Choose Find folder… (or the Move button, ⇧⌘M) and type a few letters: the list jumps straight to the right folder. Use ↑↓ to choose, ↩ to move. Moving works within one account, also for several messages at once.
Drag and drop: drag a message (or your whole selection) from the list, or from the menu bar panel, onto a folder in the sidebar. The folder lights up in gold; drop to move. Dropping on Trash deletes it. You can only drop onto an actual folder, not onto the account name.
Watching several folders: Settings → Accounts → Also watch these folders. New mail there is announced the same way, optionally with its own sound per folder.

3.5 Searching the server

Type in the search field of the mail window. If it's not in the list, click Search on server. It searches sender and subject (and with also in the text the message itself), in whatever is selected on the left: a folder, an account or everything. With all folders it searches the Inbox and all your own folders (without system folders such as Sent, Trash and Junk). Up to 100 results per folder.

3.6 Remind me later (snooze)

Right-click a message → Remind me later: in 15 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, this evening 18:00 or tomorrow morning 08:00. The message disappears until then and the fox barks again. The mail window shows Remind me later on the left with all snoozed messages; Show again now brings one back.

3.7 Notifications and daily summary

One notification per new message (a summary when many arrive at once), optionally with a bit of text.
Click the arrow next to a notification for: Mark as read, Reply, Remind me in 1 hour, Delete.
Daily summary (Settings → General → Notifications): once a day at a set time, one notification with how much unread mail there is, what's important and who sends the most. Try now shows it immediately. If your Mac was off or closed at that time, the summary arrives as soon as Foxifier runs later that day (after the first check).

3.8 Rules and white/black lists

Just like PopTray: rules on sender, subject, text, size etc. (with wildcards or regular expressions). Actions: mark important or spam, custom sound, protect, ignore, mark as read, delete, colour, run a command (with macros like %FROM% and %SUBJECT%) or log. Senders on the white list are always trusted, on the black list treated as spam.

Note: the white and black lists only work in Foxifier. They are separate from the spam filter on your mail server, which is often managed by your provider (for example Microsoft or Google). Mail the server has already filed as spam is not seen by Foxifier, and a sender on your black list is not blocked by your provider. Click the gold exclamation mark in Settings → White/black for this explanation.

3.9 Plugins

Plugin	What it does
Notifications	macOS notifications for new mail.
Barking fox	The fox sound (or your own) for new mail.
Instant (IMAP IDLE)	The server tells the app about new mail itself, usually within seconds.
Follow Focus	Quiet during a Focus. Most reliable with two Shortcuts automations that open `foxifier://focus/aan` and `foxifier://focus/uit`.
Read aloud	Reads new mail aloud. English: Daniel (en-GB); Dutch: Xander or Ellen. Install voices via System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content.
Learning spam filter	Learns from what you mark as spam or not spam.
Desktop widget	Your unread mail on the desktop (small, medium, large).
Shortcuts	Runs a shortcut from the Shortcuts app with the new mail as input.
Webhook	Sends new mail to a URL, e.g. ntfy.sh or Home Assistant.

3.10 Appearance

Themes: Classic gold (follows light/dark), Evening (dark brown with gold), Retro terminal (green on black).
Ambient background with the fox behind the computer, coloured or monochrome fox in the menu bar, sender logos (optional).
The window buttons at the top left always stay in colour.

3.11 Settings

General: startup, appearance, language, mail app, display, notifications, quiet hours and advanced (time-out, confirm on quit, updates, log, debug information).
Accounts: server, sign-in, check interval, sound, mail app and extra folders per account.
Rules, White/black, Plugins, About (with the donation link if you enjoy Foxifier 🙌).
Quitting asks for confirmation (turn off with Don't ask again or in Advanced).
The golden question mark at the top right of every screen opens this manual at the right chapter.

3.12 Updates

Settings → About → Check for updates…. Turn automatic checking on or off in Settings → General → Advanced. Updates are digitally signed; only genuine updates are installed. While checking you see an animation: a gold radar by default. Pick another one (fox with binoculars, sniffing trail or the fox running to the mailbox) in Settings → General → Display → Checking for updates; Preview shows it right away. If there is nothing new, the fox tells you you're up to date; the update window only appears when there is a new version.

The first time you start the app after an update, the fox shows a card with what's new. You can look again later via Settings → About → ✦ New, next to the version number.

When Foxifier finds a new version in the background, you get a notification and a gold bar appears at the top of the panel (“Version … is ready”). Click either one to view and install it. If you are using Foxifier at that moment, the update window appears right away.

3.13 📬 Mailbag

A wink for the curious: the fox keeps track of everything that passes by. In Settings → About, click 📬 Mailbag next to the version number. You'll see:

Received: today, the last 7 and 30 days, the total and the daily average.
Peaks: the busiest day ever, the busiest day of the week and the busiest hour.
Top 5 senders: who emails you most.
What you did: read, deleted, moved, snoozed and your fastest response.
The fox: how often it barked and jumped, how much spam it caught and the longest silence.

Each block comes with a (changing) joke from the fox. At the top you see since when it has been counting: the installation date or the last reset. Reset numbers sets everything back to zero, after a confirmation. The numbers stay on your Mac and are never sent anywhere.

4. Tips

⌘R in the panel: check now. ⌘⌫ in the mail window: delete.
Right-click the fox in the menu bar to open About directly.
Curious who emails you most? Have a look in the 📬 Mailbag (Settings → About).
Drag and drop (mail window):
- drag mail onto a folder = move;
- onto Trash = delete (with confirmation);
- a selection of several messages moves in one go;
- also from the menu bar panel onto a folder in the mail window;
- only onto an actual folder (not the account name), within the same account.
Let your server sort mail into folders (e.g. newsletters) and watch only the folders that matter, each with its own sound.
Use a rule Sender matches *@yourwork.com → Mark as important and the fox jumps across your screen.

5. Frequently asked questions

Does Foxifier mark my mail as read?

No. Checking and reading happen without changing anything. Only when you choose Mark as read (or a rule does) does anything change on the server.

Where are my passwords stored?

In the macOS keychain. Settings live in ~/Library/Application Support/Foxifier, without passwords.

Does Foxifier store my mail?

No, your mail stays on the server. Foxifier only temporarily keeps the headers and a bit of text to be able to alert you.

Does POP3 work?

No, only IMAP (over TLS). Nearly every provider supports IMAP.

Does Foxifier send data anywhere?

Only to your own mail server. In addition, only if you turn it on: sender logos (directly from their website), your webhook, and the update check. Debug information is only sent if you send the email yourself.

Which macOS version do I need?

macOS 14.6 (Sonoma) or later.

Is Foxifier free?

Yes: free software under the GNU GPL (version 2 or later), just like PopTray, which inspired it. If you enjoy it, you can make a contribution via Settings → About.

How do I remove Foxifier completely?

Quit the app, move it to the Trash and optionally delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Foxifier. Remove the passwords in Keychain Access (search for “foxifier”).

Why is it called Vossenpost in Dutch?

The Dutch version is called Vossenpost (“fox post”, with the black Dutch postal cap), the English one Foxifier (with the US mail cap). The language you choose decides.
